Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of α-sialon doped by RE (RE=EU, PR CE) and phase assemblages after hot-pressing

Abstract

SHS was applied for the synthesis of α' doped by Ce, Pr and Eu. The amount of Α' phase in the SHS-ed powders decreased with the increase in ionic radius of solely doped RE3+. In SHS-ed (RE,Y) α' powders, α' phase was the major crystalline. The addition of Y2O3 into the SHS-ed powder as starting materials did stabilize the ' structure and (RE,Y) α' would be as the major crystalline phase in the sintered samples when certain amount of Y2O3 was added.
