Self-oscillating triangular pulses generator based on dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator

Abstract

In this letter, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel self-oscillating triangular pulses generator based on dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). The fundamental harmonic of triangular pulses is produced by self-oscillating optoelectronic loop. Even-order harmonics suppression and phase-shifting of the odd-order harmonics are simultaneously realized by carrier phase-shifted double sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation of DPMZM. The 9 times amplitude ratio between the fundamental order and third-order harmonics is achieved by properly setting the gain of the optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) loop. Triangular pulses at fundamental tone of 4 GHz is successfully generated and the phase noise of 4 GHz microwave signals generated by OEO is -120 dBc/Hz@10 kHz.
