Scope of contemporary simulated patient methodology

Abstract

This chapter aims to document contemporary simulated patient (SP) practice in role portrayal and the contexts in which SPs work. It explores the scope of contemporary SP practice, acknowledging the impact of social, political and economic factors. Pressures on access to clinical placements have facilitated the expansion of SP-based education. The current interest in interprofessional education has led to diverse SP-based simulations to explore interprofessional collaborative practice. Key elements of learning currently associated with SP-based scenarios include communication, professionalism and patient safety. The expansion of SP roles challenges the very name simulated patient. The chapter provides specific illustrations of SP practices in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy. The implications of the widened scope of practice means that SPs and faculty need to consider ways to ensure that SPs are well prepared and cared for as they take on new ways of working.
