Scenes for an archipelago (2015-16) is the second chapter of the project that began with Towards figures of dedication, and a flood (2015). Here Nicholson has replicated Edhi Sunarso’s method to develop a new cycle of dioramas, based upon scenes proposed to him by a community of Hazara refugees stranded in Cisurua, Indonesia.
The lines of political allegiance imagined in the original diorama are here expanded to an extra-sovereign dimension, and the question is posed of how belonging and obligations of care are formed and mal-formed through state ideology and its systems of visualisation
