Researching transnational family life in a mobile era

Abstract

This chapter presents a critical application of various methods to unpack the vital role of mobile communication technologies in sustaining long-distance relationships among 21 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Melbourne, Australia, and their left-behind loved ones in the Philippines. It underscores the deployment of multi-sited in-depth interviews, visual methods, a simple participant observation and an analysis of field notes to uncover the paradoxical consequences of mobile device use in sustaining transnational relationships. By employing a critical mobilities lens, this chapter presents a nuanced perspective in examining the conduct of family life at a distance in a digital era.
