This article shows that in spite of the documented discrimination against them in an industry notoriously male dominated, the number of women directors in Italy is growing and their films are contributing to create a nuanced understanding of female subjectivity on screen. Drawing on interviews with filmmakers and analysis of a select number of their films, the article demonstrates how women have contributed to Italian cinema since its beginning.
