Abstract

Title: Reflective Practice in Occupational Therapy: The need for a model to guide competency based learning in a professional practice course
Background
A key professional competency for OTs is engagement in reflective practice. Within the Australian minimum competency standards for new graduate occupational therapist (OT AUSTRALIA 2010), it is a component of five of the six competency areas. Reflective practice is also recognised by AHPRA
within two of the accepted continuing professional development (CPD) informal learning activities.

Within higher education, learning outcomes articulate a clear idea of what students need to know and how well this needs to be applied and understood. In professional degrees such as OT, competencies define the learning outcomes, and in turn, the curriculum and assessment criteria.
Competencies, such as reflective practice, are based on how they are defined and applied in practice by the profession.
Method:
Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how reflective practice is defined and applied within OT; what established models underpin OT approaches to reflective practice; and how this compares to other
professional groups.
A review of the literature since 2001 was conducted, using search terms that included occupational therapy, reflection, and reflective practice. This paper presents the results of this review.
Discussion/Outcomes:
Despite acknowledgement of the importance of reflective practice in facilitating learning, professional practice and CPD; there is a significant lack of published research on reflective practice in OT and a specific model of reflective practice for the OT profession has not been defined, developed or evaluated.

Conclusion:
Arguments supporting the need for further research and the development of an OT specific reflective practice model are put forward
