Lee Shulman introduced the construct of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in the mid 1980s to acknowledge and highlight a specialised form of professional knowledge possessed by teachers that sets them aside from other professionals. The idea of a specialised form of knowledge crucial to expertise in teaching resonated well with academics, so PCK was quickly explored, adopted and adapted in a diversity of ways by researchers in the field. In 2012 the challenge to revisit PCK was taken up by researchers at a workshop, known as the PCK Summit. The Summit resulted in, among other outcomes, a ‘consensus model’ of PCK in science education. However, by early 2016 it became evident that researchers were appearing to interpret and operationalise the model differently. In late 2016, an international group of researchers in science PCK gathered to address these different and sometimes implicit interpretations and operationalisations in a second PCK summit in Leiden.
Our session seeks to offer an overview of the research presented in an upcoming book that is an outcome of this second summit, and introduce the new model, known as the Refined Consensus Model of PCK, and clarify and demonstrate its use in research and teacher education and practice. We will show how this new consensus model of PCK is strongly connected with empirical data of varying nature, contains a tailored language to describe the nature of PCK, and can be used as a framework for the design of future PCK studies. With PCK continuing to be very popular as a teaching and research topic, this book, and our session, is positioned to offer an up-to-date, international perspective on the evolving nature of PCK and how it is shaping science education research and teacher education agendas.
