Abstract

Redox transmetallation between lanthanoid metals, diorganomercurials, HgR2 (R = C6F5 or Ph), and 3,5-(tBu or Ph)-disubstituted pyrazoles (R2pzH) and between the metals and thallium 3,5-(tBu or Ph)-disubstituted pyrazolates have been developed as routes to lanthanoid(III) and lanthanoid(II) pyrazolates. Crystal structures of [Ln(tBu2Pz)3L2] (L = tetrahydrofuran (thf); L2 = 1,2-dimethoxyethane (dme)), [Ln(Ph2pz)3(thf)a], and [Ln(Ph2pz)3L2] (L = Ph3PO or dme) have established η2-pyrazolate binding as the dominant coordination mode in tris(pyrazolato)lanthanoid(III) complexes. With lanthanoid(II) pyrazolates, η2-binding is observed in [Ln(Ph2pz)2(dme)2], and the unprecedented μ-ηn2:η2-coordination in [Yb(tBu2pz)2(thf)]2. Redox transmetallation between Yb metal and thallium(I) 1,4-diphospha-2-stibacyclopentadienide yields [Yb(η5-C2tBu2P2Sb) 2(η2-(Sb,P)-C2tBu2P 2Sb)]- and oxidation of [Sm(C5Me5)2] with [Tl(C2tBu2P2Sb)]/[Tl(C2tBu 2P3)] provided single crystals of [Sm(C5Me5)2(η2-C 2tBu2P3)(thf)].
