Abstract

Reports indicate a trend in which advisors recommend a combination of business structures to their clients operating small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with companies and discretionary trusts featuring prominently. However, more analysis is needed to provide insights into the underlying reasons for their business structure recommendations. This article comprehensively analyses the underlying reasons Australian SME advisors recommend business structures. The analysis demonstrates that there are two core attributes that advisors seek to achieve for their clients - tax minimisation and asset protection.
