Abstract

Skin aging is an inevitable biological occurrence of human life. The skin care products market based on natural products remain to see strong growth. Nephelium lappaceum, traditionally known as “rambutan,” is an ever popular tree that is native to Malaysia and grown in other parts of the world. The various parts of rambutan fruits extract reported that it has antioxidant and antiaging properties. This chapter focuses to present an updated information about the antioxidant and antiaging potency of rambutan fruits; the constituents that are responsible for its antiaging effect have also been discussed. Rambutan peel extracts have been mainly involved in antioxidant and antiaging effect due to the presence of huge amount of polyphenolic compounds. The rambutan peel phenolic extract protects against oxidative stress in H2O2-induced HepG2 cells in a dose-response manner. Moreover the antiaging cream was prepared using rambutan peel extract and tested for its antiaging effect. The results indicated that the rambutan peel extract can be used for the development of cosmetic products. It is also used as an essential antioxidant strategy in reducing oxidative stress caused by skin exposure to UV radiation in the prevention and treatment of skin aging. Based on the results demonstrated by many researchers, the formulation containing rambutan peels extract can be usable for the skin, and it has a good potential for cosmetic product development.
