Abstract

Laboratory soil columns, packed to simulate tilled soils with fine clod sizes, were subjected to rainstorms of various durations and intensities. Surface seal development was described in terms of a reduced hydraulic conductance, moderated to a first approximation by the total rainfall energy. A numerical solution of the transport (Richards') equation was developed which predicts the time of incipient ponding and infiltration rates after ponding. Predicted estimates agreed well with observed values. -from Authors
