Abstract

The break-up of Yugoslavia is, in historical accounts, usually reduced to nationalist wars which started in 1991. On the one hand, the collapse of the state had been preceded by almost a decade of demonstrations, (nationalist) media propaganda, and other types of political mobilisation. On the other band, however, pro-Yugoslav media did exist, offering alternative configurations of state, identity, and communication. [extract]
