Abstract

The pyrolysis kinetics of two species of green microalgae, Chlorococcum sp. and Botryococcus braunii by thermogravimetric analysis have been studied. Pyrolysis of the green microalgae was carried out at four heating rates (10, 15, 20 and 25 oC/min) and the pyrolysis kinetic was analyzed using three model-free methods, namely the Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method, the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method and the Friedmann method. Based on the analysis using the KAS, FWO and Friedman methods, the activation energy (Ea) for the pyrolysis of Chlorococcum sp. were 168.68 kJ/mol, 169.90 kJ/mol and 183.67 kJ/mol, respectively. The Ea values of pyrolysis of Chlorococcum sp. were lower than those of Botryococcus braunii, which contained higher chlorophyll content.
