Priority-based routing protocol for data gathering process in a wireless sensor network environment

Abstract

The key issue on wireless sensor network (WSN) application lies on the energy efficient data transmission, where energy-constrained sensors are expected to operate for long periods. The centralized data transmission protocol is deemed to be inefficient to be applied in WSN because it adopts the greedy routing protocol. This technique may lead to congestion during the data transmission and cause a significant increase to the sensor's energy consumption. The priority- based routing protocol is developed in this paper to overcome this issue. This technique classifies data into three categories: the fire, abnormal, and normal to determine the data priority. Each priority has a different node path based on the order of the shortest distance. The capacity for holding data at an aggregation point is determined based on each priority type. The aggregated data is sent through a node path based on the relevant data priorities. By reducing data transmission density, the energy consumption can be reduced, results in extending the network lifetime.
