The principles of paper hydrophobization - internal and surface sizing are discussed. The mechanism of surface sizing with styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) is also presented. The effect of sizing on wetting and absorption of liquids in paper is discussed. It is found that the wetting and absorption of liquids on paper can be controlled with hydrophobic domains. Hydrophobic domains can be created by vapor physisorption/chemisorption.
