Abstract

This chapter discusses our approach to research at SensiLab, a creative technologies research laboratory at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Spanning two Faculties within the university structure (Information Technology and Art Design and Architecture), the lab’s mission is to understand the innovative creative applications and undiscovered opportunities of technology. Our research is based in practice, but we extend the traditional concerns of creative practices to other disciplines, particularly those related to engineering and technology. After introducing basic concepts around knowledge and its communication, we discuss the specific methodologies and the culture that support our research practice. We illustrate this by describing some example projects created in the lab and reflect on the changing nature of practice-based research in a technological setting.
