Abstract
Based on considerations about the role of German as an academic language in the age of increasing mobility of students and academic staff (Sect. 1), we argue in the following article for the creation of a digital corpus of the spoken German academic language, which should be designed for research as well as language teaching and learning . A corresponding project (EurAG) is presented in Section 2. The challenges and opportunities that corpus-based language teaching offers are discussed in Section 3. Finally, experiences with the MICASE corpus in English lessons at the Language Center of the University of Jyvaskyla are described, which show that corpus-based learning particularly helps to develop a “feel” for linguistic appropriateness and promotes the transfer between receptive and productive performance in the target language
