Abstract
'Chopin’s Piano' is a new stage adaptation of Paul Kildea's book of the same name. Two performers (Aura Go and Jennifer Vuletic) inhabit 16 roles in a narrative that interweaves Chopin’s 24 Preludes Op. 28 and theatre performance. Chopin's Piano toured nationally for Musica Viva in July 2023. The work innovates the ways
1) instrumental repertoire is treated, presented, and experienced;
2) theatre and live music performance intersect;
3) meaning making and storytelling are developed and enacted, and
4) musicians’ artistry is developed.
It builds on prior research applying Chekhovian methods of embodiment to music performance (Go, 2021, 2022), to develop a new performance practice, ‘musician in role’, in which the musician simultaneously inhabits theatrical and musical performance modes.
