Abstract

Swirling flow tundish (SFT) is a kind of newly developed tundish. With a swirling chamber in the tundish, the function of turbulence inhibiting pouring pad can be fully realized, and at the same time, similar metallurgical effect with centrifugal flow tundish can also be obtained. Its advantages are improving flow field of the tundish and promoting inclusion floatation, coalescence and removal. In this work, water model experiments of flow pattern and numerical simulation of a swirling flow tundish were carried out. The simulation results show that the turbulent dissipation is almost confined in the inlet region because of the introduction of swirling chamber, which is favorable for coalescence of inclusion to bigger one. The unsymmetrical flow in the tundish is evident because of the asymmetrical position of inlet. These results are essential for optimizing the position of swirling chamber, dam and weir parameters of swirling flow tundish.
