The PhD system in the countries Australia would most wish to emulate - Germany, Japan and USA - is alive and well and mostly free from the mindless attacks on the system heard in Australia. The normal training ground for industrial researchers lies in the university and the PhD system - at least in the countries mentioned. I conclude that we should do everything we can to strengthen the system, and to ensure that more PhDs are industrially employed. For chemical engineering, industry should be the normal, but not the only goal for PhDs. This article reviews the PhD system.
