Abstract
Vegetable oils, such as sunflower oil, have been found to effectively rejuvenate aged bitumen and heal cracks. In this study, palm oil fractions (POF), specifically palm cooking oil (PCO), palm mid fraction (PMF), and palm stearin (PS), are evaluated as potential rejuvenators for short-term aged bitumen (RTFOT), with sunflower oil (SO) a control. Thin-film bitumen samples were produced using 3D-printed moulds. The healing rates of the rejuvenators were obtained by measuring the reduction in crack width over time. PMF showed an equivalent healing speed as SO, with the crack closing at 20 min, followed by PCO, PS, and RTFOT at 30, 120, and 270 min, respectively. The healed samples were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify the rejuvenators’ peaks at 1740 cm−1. The areas of the rejuvenator, carbonyl, and sulfoxide peaks were found to determine their respective indices, which were then used to evaluate the anti-aging performance of the POF in aged bitumen. The results showed that PS had the highest reduction in the carbonyl and sulfoxide indices, at 74%, followed by PMF, SO, and PCO at 62%, 56%, and 53%, respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the POF, particularly PMF, have great potential as rejuvenators in aged bitumen.
