Parents and Parent–Child Relationships in Contemporary Chinese Children’s Literature (1978–2014)

Abstract

A marked characteristic of traditional Chinese society was the adherence to its hierarchical structure and the expectation of children’s utmost obedience to parental authority. In the last four decades, however, there has been a shift away from enforcing this blind obedience. This essay investigates the portrayal of parents and parent–child relationships in contemporary Chinese children’s literature (1978–2014), which have become more diversified than previous children’s literature. It attempts to demonstrate the connection with, as well as the movement away from traditional stereotypes concerning the role of parents in children’s literature. Thus, analysis of these images offers us an insight into Chinese society, and the use of children’s literature in China as a didactic tool for moral education.
