Abstract

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent heat transfer in a pipe have been computed over the range of Prandtl number, 0.2 = Pr = 7.0, at fixed Kármán number, Ret = 180. These data sets are used to explore the similarity structure affiliated with the mechanisms that underlie the establishment of the mean temperature profile for fully developed turbulent transport through a pipe subjected to a constant surface heat flux. The analysis, which follows the framework developed by Wei et al. (2005a), employs multiscale analysis of the Reynolds-averaged energy equation to develop a basis for understanding how the characteristics of the relevant transport terms develop self-similar relationships characteristic at high Peclet number, Pet = PrRet
