Abstract

As the global population ages, a growing number of older adults will require long-term care (LTC). This chapter uses the term nursing home broadly to encompass all residential LTC facilities that meet this definition. It first synthesises information at the macro level, describing the place of nursing home care as it relates to the societal and governmental structures and financing. Next, data is presented at the meso or organisational level, including nursing home care models, regulation, financing, and facility characteristics. The chapter then compares nursing home resident microlevel demographic, clinical, and functional characteristics. It is followed by a review of quality measurement, quality improvement efforts, and legal issues in nursing homes. Finally, innovations, challenges of comparing nursing home care internationally, and future directions for research are presented. Achieving high-quality and affordable care for older adults living in nursing homes is a key priority for many national governments.
