Numerical simulation of CFRP strengthened steel square hollow section (SHS) subject to torsion

Abstract

Strengthening of steel structures by bonding carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates has attracted much recent research attention especially in bending and compression. However, knowledge is very limited on the behavior of CFRP strengthened steel members under torsion, with only several specimens tested in this area. A brief description of torsional tests previously carried out on both thin-walled and thick-walled CFRP strengthened steel square hollow section (SHS) members is first presented. The second part of this paper deals with the numerical simulation of specimens under torsion to predict the capacity and failure modes. The numerical results seem to be in good agreement with the available experimental data in terms of load-displacement response and failure mode. It is found that CFRP layers could increase the torsion resistance capacity of both thin-walled and thick-walled section compared to the bare steel member.
