Abstract
Numerical study in characterizing granular materials by distinct element method was studied. The simulations were performed based on distinct element method (DEM) modified by incorporating a rolling friction model in the rotational equation of the particle. The angle of repose was not sensitive to density, Poisson's ratio, damping coefficient and Young's modulus. The angle of repose increased with an increase in rolling or sliding friction coefficient, decreased with an increase in particle size and increased on decreasing the container thickness due to formation of strong force arches originating from front and rear walls.
