Abstract
Effective educational planning requires an accurate understanding of student growth. Few researchers have examined the growth trajectories of students’ complex competencies, particularly of students with disability (SWD). Our study aims to fill this knowledge gap by analyzing individualized growth of SWD in such skills. We used Markov chain modeling on progress data from 7760 SWD. It was found that students who start out low have more difficulty progressing and that growth patterns vary among SWD and students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Students’ individualized patterns of growth may provide nuanced expectations of growth rather than setting lower expectations based on a pre-defined group to which a student belongs. Such work can promote inclusion to provide all students with equitable access to learning.
