Translated title of the contribution: Not isolated island. Le Stinche in the Middle Ages

Research output: Contribution to journalArticleResearchpeer-review

The essay deals with the first period in the history of the Stinche, the prison of the Municipality of Florence established around 1300, paying particular attention to the relationship between prisoners and between them and the outside world. Compared to other cases, life in the Florentine prison is well documented, which allows for an in-depth analysis. The documents show that a semi-inclusive prison regime, typical of this period, was able to prevent the complete social isolation of the prisoners, alleviating their suffering in prison. In this perspective, the case analyzed shows in the institution of the prison a change in the attitude towards social and religious marginality: from expulsion to its containment.
