Abstract
This paper explores the effects of rapid technological advancements on education, learning, creativity, and the shifting responsibilities of classroom teachers, particularly in relation to generative AI. The relentless pace of technological progress demands that educators continuously adjust, often without the time to fully comprehend each new learning technology. Instead of striving to master every emerging technology, teachers can apply Gibson’s affordance theory to better navigate this complex environment. Affordance theory, which focuses on perceiving the environment as a set of action possibilities (affordances) rather than simply as objects within environments, provides a useful framework for educators to assess the potential digital technologies and tools, including limitations. This paper introduces a series of affordance-driven principles to evaluate the relevance of technology, including ease of integration, flexibility to meet diverse learning needs, support for collaborative creativity, and alignment with educational goals. Generative AI serves as a case study, demonstrating its affordances for generating content, tailoring learning experiences, and enhancing student engagement, while also addressing limitations such as ethical challenges and privacy concerns. By adopting an affordance-based perspective, educators can make informed, perception-based choices about technology.
