Abstract

There is a long history of nativized varieties of English, some of which go back around 200 years in some parts of the world covering culturally and linguistically dissimilar contexts such as Africa, South Asia, and the Far East. Over the last few decades, nativized varieties have received due attention in research and practice in world Englishes. This entry introduces nativized varieties from a Cultural Linguistics perspective in terms of cultural conceptualizations, including cultural schema, cultural category, and cultural metaphor. Within the scope of the analytical framework of Cultural Linguistics, “nativized” varieties of English are those that encode cultural conceptualizations of the speech community for whom English has found a communicative function for intracultural and intercultural communication.
