N2 - The etiology of multiple sclerosis is linked to a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Both cell-mediated and humoral immune responses, triggered by extraneous or autoantigens, are likely to contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. A greater insight into the fundamental cause of multiple sclerosis has been provided by the recognition that certain immune response genes are associated with an increased susceptibility to the disease. Such knowledge should provide new opportunities for selective therapeutic interventions.
