note = "Acrylic on canvas with painted timber Curator: Gary Carrion-Murayari This body of work uses painting as a tool to investigate issues around the legacy of colonialism, the construction of national identity, personal history, and contemporary politics in Australia. The densely layered canvases incorporate historical imagery ranging from political cartoons, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century painting, artworks created by the artist{\textquoteright}s mother and grandmother, fragments of bodies, and handwritten text rendered with a variety of painterly gestures. Double-sided and scaled to the human body, the works were arranged in a carefully composed installation, positioning the viewer at the intersection of a broad range of cultural and historical influences. Although driven by a deep and rigorous process of historical research, the paintings adopt a playful and even humorous take on historical memory and ingrained social conventions. “Helen Johnson: Ends” is the artist{\textquoteright}s first exhibition in an American institution. ; Helen Johnson: Ends ; Conference date: 13-09-2017 Through 14-01-2018",
