Abstract

Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been widely used as a retrofitted overlay material for ageing metallic structures in civil industry. However, some challenges remain in the detection and monitoring of concealed defects in such composite systems under service loads. The potential and benefits of using Lamb waves to detect defects in plate-like structures have been well studied and identified. This paper presents a verification of the feasibility of applying low-frequency Lamb waves to detect and monitor concealed fatigue crack growth in CFRP-strengthened steel plate. The effects of implementing CFRP on Lamb wave propagation were studied. Both finite element (FE) simulations and experimental validations were conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The predicted results were correlated well with measurements, indicating that the method could effectively detect the fatigue crack propagation
