Molecular indicators of diagenesis in lignite diastereomeric configuration of triterpenoid derived aromatic hydrocarbons

The ratio of tetramethyloctahydropicene diastereomers I and II is shown to vary as a function of (a) depth, (b) lithotype and (c) seam in a 100 m core of continuous coal taken from the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. This is the first illustration that triterpenoid derived aromatic hydrocarbon diastereomers can be used as molecular indicators of diagenesis.
