Abstract
The inclusion of the patient perspective is an important aspect in patient-oriented health
care and complements medical diagnostics and clinical findings. Through the assessment of health-related quality of life physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients are revealed. Various generic as well as disease-specific instruments to measure
health-related quality of life have been developed over the past decades. However, in
practice some methodological challenges remain that can be addressed by use of modern
test theory methods. In the past, comprehensive and complex questionnaires were required to precisely measure self-reported outcomes. In contrast, the development of computer-adaptive tests (CATs) offers the unique opportunity to administer only those items that
are most informative to assess subjective well-being. Thus, it is possible to use shorter
questionnaires while retaining reliability. This paper outlines and discusses the development and application of computer-adaptive tests in clinical outcomes assessment
