Abstract
Alloys based on TiAl have received a great deal of attention over the last ten or so years. In parallel with this work there has been a major programme in the IRC, in conjunction with Rolls-Royce, aimed at developing a burn-resistant Ti-based alloy. It appears that the major concern is now focused on producing and processing these alloys cost-effectively. This paper will summarise the current state of our understanding of the structure and properties of these alloys and show what progress has been made in reducing the costs of production and processing whilst maintaining the desired properties.
