Abstract

The high temperature properties of a 6063 aluminum alloy (matrix Al + 0.4 Si and 0.5 Mg) have been characterized. A careful microstructural investigation has been done using TEM. In the overaged condition, a secondary precipitation has been detected. The mechanical behaviour of the material in the T6 and in the overaged states has been characterized with different kinds of tests. Tensile tests and creep experiments have been conducted both at room and high temperatures. It is shown that the same saturation state can be reached with creep tests or tensile tests. The values of the n parameter n=dLn(ε)/dLn(σ) are found to be between 10 and 20. The activation energy of the deformation mechanism is close to that of self diffusion in aluminum. The grain size dependence of the deformation behaviour has been studied.
