Abstract
This chapter has four aims:
to provide information on the distribution of mental health disorder in the Australian population
to describe in overview some of the characteristics of the services that are in place to respond to the needs of people with these disorders
to describe the extent to which needs of people with mental health problems are being met, or not, by those services
to describe a strand of work, described as mental health literacy, that uses survey methodologies to examine community understandings of mental health disorder and its treatment.
