Abstract

To the Editor:
ARDS is a life-threatening form of respiratory failure.1 ARDS accounts for roughly 10% of ICU admissions, with in-hospital mortality rate of nearly 40%.2 Survivors of ARDS also experience extensive morbidity, including both physical and psychologic sequelae that can persist for years.3
Although ARDS frequently is encountered in the ICU, patients and families are often less familiar with this syndrome and may instead gather medical information from news sources, especially the internet.4 Biased reporting in news stories could lead patients and families to be misinformed regarding ARDS. This is especially important during major infectious outbreaks, such as the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, where the lay public might evaluate the severity of a disease process on the basis of published media reports of individual patients. Therefore, we evaluated reports of patients with ARDS that were published in online media to determine how treatment, death, and disability from this disease were portrayed.
