Abstract
The Metropolitan area of Medellin, comprising 10 municipalities and a total of 3.300.000 inhabitants, is located at the northern end of the Andes mountains in the valley of the Aburra River. The peripheral areas of Medellin are undergoing transformation: new architectures surrounded by communal public spaces which have been nonexistent until now has managed to begin an integration process which just 5 years ago have seemed impossible, as the city had the dubious honour of being one of the most violent cities in the world, with a homicide rate of 270 deaths per 100.000 inhabitants during the 1990'2 due to the appearance of drug cartels and arms trafficking. How did a city like Medellin achieved such a noticeable change in such a short space of time?
