Mean trajectory predictions for a low-speed dynamical system: Newton versus Einstein

    Abstract

    The Newtonian and special-relativistic predictions for the mean trajectory of a model low-speed dynamical system arc compared, where an ensemble of trajectories is used to calculate the mean trajectory in each theory. Contrary to conventional expectation, we show that the mean trajectory predictions of the two theories, which are based on the same parameters and initial conditions, can rapidly disagree completely. This surprising result raises an important fundamental question: When the two mean trajectory predictions for a low-speed system are completely different, which prediction is empirically correct?
