Abstract

My music career has spanned improvisation, songwriting, sound art, electronic works, performance art, noise music and a wide range of notated compositions that combine electronic and acoustic instruments. My compositional output ranges from solo pieces, pop songs, to laptop orchestra, film soundtrack, installation and opera. It is a collaborative practice grounded in artistic research. The chapter outlines my ongoing investigation into the extremes of music, and in particular, my ongoing fascination with low frequency sound. How my engagement with low frequency sound began and has been deployed across almost a diverse range of projects is examined from my own perspective, framed as a “concept of low.” This idea is unpacked across four general music frameworks: conceptual, instrumental, timbral, and structural.
