Gender-sensitive participatory design is an equalising force used to create spaces and places of inclusion. By addressing power dynamics internal to the processes of design and—in turn—challenging the inherent and conventional ‘expert’ lead process, gender-sensitive participatory design can challenge traditional hierarchical power structures. This chapter examines a range of projects from the Monash University XYX Lab which surface diverse voices; strengthen marginalised communities’ agency over decisions that affect them; apply a gender lens to the design process and gather data and analysis of gendered experience for the purpose of designing more inclusive cities.
