Abstract

There are two misconceptions about imprisonment in the Middle Ages. The first is that prisons before the early nineteenth century rarely served as a means of punishment. The second is that, quite apart from any other functions, the medieval prison was a terrible place. This Article contradicts both misconceptions using evidence that relates detention itself and prisoner experiences
