Language misconceptions of ethnic Southeast Asian primary school students in mathematics and the classroom

Abstract

At the author's school there are a large population of second language learners (particularly Southeast Asian) and this has impacted on the way teachers teach and how the students learn. The author pursued an in-depth mathematical study with a specific group of students in an attempt to better understand how knowledge and skills are developed. Charts of the factors that educators or facilitators of education in mathematics need to be aware of are provided.
