Abstract
This article discusses the embedded subject markers -ga and -no in Japanese as a grammatical variation as to their diachronic status, while reporting data obtained from Okada Collection, which covers the language use in Taisho-Showa era. It particularly focuses on discrepancies in the use between the pre-modern and the modern Japanese, addressing a change in the linguistic aspects of the variation in a quantitative manner. Furthermore, referring to data from the minutes of the Japanese Diet, which record utterances with similar characteristics, it argues that the reported linguistic change can be considered as a change occurred in “Japanese Standard”.
