title = "Justification of cultural work amongst young Chinese writers",
abstract = "What could be the justification for young Chinese writers justification for their participation in the cultural industries? Caught between a commercialisng global cultural market and a controlled state-conferred legitimacy, young writers in China found it impossible to retain their {\textquoteleft}creative autonomy{\textquoteright}. For many, being neither a salaried state employee nor pursuing success as a creative entrepreneur allowed an idealised authentic self to flourish. This paper reveals the management of creative career in China{\textquoteright}s literary field through theory of justification. The paper focused on how young graduates, who have had a creative practice for fewer than ten years in a range of full- and part-time capacities, established their independent creative practices. I asked how their attitudes towards their creative work have changed and what were their experiences with the new creative industries policy aimed at supporting young talent.",
