Abstract

In 2016, the issue of Catalonia’s potential secession from Spain may have been eclipsed by the terror attacks in several European cities as well as the consequences for Europe created by the refugee crisis in Syria. This said, the issue of Catalonia’s claim for statehood particularly if the Catalans are “successful”, is an important one for Europe and also the broader international community. Simply because of the awkward questions their claim and its potential success would raise.
