Abstract

This chapter presents an introduction to an edited volume that critically explores the concept of digital empowerment for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, challenging the deficit views that often dominate this field. This chapter highlights the strengths, agency, resilience, and capabilities of these minority groups, noting the emphasis throughout the book towards recognising their active participation in digital environments as part of settlement. This chapter offers an overview of the multi-author work that brings together international research and practical insights aimed at enhancing understanding of digital literacy and empowerment in context. The collection includes both theoretical and empirical chapters that detail how digital technologies oriented to empowerment can aid migrants and refugees in accessing services, connecting with communities, participating fully in societal and economic activities, and overcoming barriers. The introduction highlights how each chapter in the volume contributes to a paradigm shift towards practices that support migrants and refugees not just as learners but as proficient digital citizens. It also highlights the importance of international research for policymakers, educators, and practitioners advocating for comprehensive policies and educational strategies that acknowledge and harness the potential of migrants and refugees in the digital world.
